SUMMARY:Mindful Rider Retreat: How We Show Up Matters
DESCRIPTION:A weekend to slow down\, tune in\, and transform the way you connect—with yourself and with your horse. \nAre you someone who wants to grow—both as a rider and as a human?\nYou give so much to everyone else. But when’s the last time you paused to give something to yourself? \nThis retreat is designed for equestrians who want to deepen their self-awareness\, unlock greater connection with their horses\, and become the kind of partner a horse wants to follow. \nHow we show up matters.\nOur horses feel everything. They respond to our posture\, our nervous system\, and our energy—far more than to our techniques or cues. This weekend is a chance to explore how presence\, softness\, and self-awareness can transform your relationship with your horse… and yourself. \nYou can attend Saturday or Sunday or both. \nSaturday: The Mindful Rider Experience (No Horse Required)\nTime: 8:30 AM – 3:00 PMCost: $230Min/Max Participants: 4/6 \nA day of deep awareness\, energetic alignment\, and embodied horsemanship. \n8:30 – Opening Circle: We Are All Energy \nMeet us in the air-conditioned comfort of the Wellness Center. Settle in\, sip some coffee or tea\, and meet your fellow mindful riders. We’ll introduce the weekend theme and explore how our inner state sets the tone for connection—with horses and with ourselves. \n9:00 – Session 1: The Energy We Bring (Cathy Mattingly) \nAn abbreviated\, eye-opening\, science-informed look at the nervous system and co-regulation. Learn how your energy influences your horse’s experience—and how mindfulness starts within. \n9:30 – Session 2: The Mindful Equestrian Yoga Class (Cathy Mattingly) \nA grounding practice designed for equestrians of all levels. Stretch\, breathe\, listen to your body and discover new awareness in your hips\, spine\, core\, and seat. No yoga experience required. \n \n10:30 – Break \nTalk to your new friends\, relax under the trees\, or journal in a quiet corner. \n10:45 – Session 3: Horsempowerment: Energy in Action (Gillian Vallis) \nStep into the arena for a guided experience with the Peace Ponies. Notice how horses respond to your presence\, energy\, and intention—no riding\, no pressure\, just powerful insight. \n \n12:15 – Lunch \nLunch is not included in the price of the retreat. You can bring your own or place an order with us from a local favorite like Wallace Station or The Midway Bakery. Feel free to gather on the porch or sit on a bench under a tree. \n12:45 – Session 4: Listening Differently: Introduction to Animal Communication (Jenny Salyers) \nLed by intuitive equestrian Jenny\, this session opens a window into what your horse may be trying to tell you. Learn how to tune in and listen—not just with your ears\, but with your whole self. \n1:45 – Break \nStretch your legs\, sip some water\, or jot down what’s rising. \n2:00 – Session 5: In the Saddle Before Mounting Your Horse: Embodied Awareness with Harmony the Mechanical Horse (Shelbie Fredenhagan) \nExplore how subtle shifts in your posture and seat affect the horse beneath you. This innovative session helps you identify and release tension and misalignment—so your horse doesn’t have to compensate. \n \n🕒 After We Finish – Integration Time \nReflect\, rest\, or take a quiet walk around the farm. SUMMARY:Conditioning Your Horse for Spring Riding
DESCRIPTION:DATES/TIMES\nMarch 22  | 9 AM – 4 PM (Times subject to change based on number of participants)  \nCOURSE FOCUS\nTaking the elements of self work in the Cultivating Effortlessness: Finding Your Natural Posture on Horseback and Moving in Balance: Tai Chi for better horsemanship\, Instructor Shelbie Fredenhagen helps you bring it all together with your horse with a lecture followed by your choice of in hand\, ground work or mounted sessions. Shelbie is a talented and exceptionally knowledgeable instructor who can work with riders of all levels to advance their skills while putting their horses mental and physical wellbeing first. \n\nCorrective lunging to promote clear ideas of your aids\, to improve the horses balance\, and to gain a base of support for the horse. By lunging in this manner we set the horse up for success and teach him to think about his surroundings and circumstances\, rather than only reacting.\nIn-hand work with the halter and/or bridle. Educating the rider’s feel of the horse and the mouth from the ground gives more clarity in what you are looking for with your horse. The horse gets to understand what you are trying to communicate and the rider can view the horse easier than on the back. It also introduces body awareness and fine-tunes the language of the aids to the horse through flexions\, lateral work\, and transitions. Again working to improve the horses balance and bring awareness to natural asymmetry\, and their body.\nProgressive work under saddle – we translate what was taught on the lunge and in-hand and continue to explain the aids through gymnastics to access the horse without fighting and bracing. This includes contact\, leg aids\, body position; developing balance for each horse and the task at hand. By gaining this proprioception (the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position\, motion\, and equilibrium) the horse will gain balance\, straightness\, and collection with confidence.\n\nPrivate lessons are also available March 23-29\, 2025. Contact Shelbie to schedule. \nMinimum 3 horse-human pairs | Maximum 6 horse-human pairs for private session; up to 12 horse-human pairs if all are semi-private \nCOST\nClinic with private lesson $100\, clinic with semi-private lesson $75\, auditors welcome $25  \nRegister for Lecture and Private Lesson \nRegister for Lecture and Semi-Private Lesson \nRegister to Audit \nABOUT SHELBIE\nShelbie Fredenhagen is a classical equitation trainer\, riding instructor and traveling clinician whose work is rooted in biomechanics and respect for the horse.  Shelbie has dedicated her life to learn integrative approaches that honor how horses think\, learn\, and feel. She aims to bring patient\, kind work for the horse and aid the rider to understand their horses through feel and intention. This desire to understand the entire picture has led Shelbie to study both Classical Masters and Integrative Bodywork. Shelbie works to create fluid\, individualized training programs to bring out horses naturally relaxed and true demeaner. Shelbie uses integrated bodywork and cross-training methods rooted in classical principles which honor the horse’s nature. Her training always surrounds the well-being and longevity of the horse.
